• Many adolescents feel that they can alieviate some of the pain of this disorder by involving themselves in self-harming behaviors such as alcohol and drug abuse, dangerous life threatening activities, self mutilation (cutting), and in some extreme cases SUICIDE.

If Left Untreated

• In the case of early onset depression, if left untreated the disease can carry on into adulthood and lead to addition physical and psychological problems.

Topic: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Description: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, more frequently known as OCD, is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by an individual having repeated obsessions and/or compulsions that are defined as being extreme and irrational. These obsessions and compulsions are only significant if they cause the individual distress and/or get in the way of their everyday routine.

Diagnostic criteria:
*According to DSM IV-TR
1. Obsessions
• Persistent thoughts, desires, or images that are disturbing and inappropriate and that cause distress to the individual
• The obsessions are more than just build up anxiety of real-life troubles.
• The individual tries to disregard or suppress these obsessions or counteract them by performing an action or thought
• The individual is aware that these
obsessions are a creation of their own minds
2. Compulsions
• Repeated behaviors or mental thoughts that the person feels obligated to perform in response to their obsession. Some of these repeated behaviors include: cleaning, rechecking, tapping, praying, counting, etc.
• These repeated behaviors and mental acts are performed to relieve or prevent anxiety and stress that the individual feels about an obsession.

- Adults are able to recognize that their obsessions and compulsions are extreme and irrational; however, many children to not.
- The obsessions and compulsions cause suffering and take up a considerable amount of time to perform to the point that these ritualistic activities interfere with their everyday routines such as school, work, or social activities.

Cause:
As of now there is no sufficient evidence that proves the cause of this disorder. However, some research studies propose that it may be a result of a frontal lobe-limbic-basal ganglia dysfunction.

Treatment and Prevention
Prevention is not known, but effective treatment has been proven to be very beneficial for the patient. Firstly, it is very important to get a physical as well as a psychiatric examination to rule out any other possibilities. If results are positive for the disorder then the psychiatrist will design a treatment plan based on your needs and most likely will consist of either cognitive therapy or medication- in some cases where the child is unresponsive to the therapy- or a combination of both

* Según el DSM IV-TR
1. Obsesiones

Topic: Eating Disorders
Description:
The two main types of eating disorders that are part of the DSM IV are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa (which usually
precedes anorexia). Eating Disorders have become more and more prevalent over the last couple of decades, especially in the female population, and are a life threatening problem that many adolescents have been facing.

Anorexia: is characterized by an individual who has suffered extreme weight loss, perturbed thoughts of body- image, and an overwhelming sense of panic of becoming fat. There are two subtypes: restricting and binge-eating/purging.
1. Restricting subtype is defined by an individual who doesn’t eat much at all and is very careful of the types of food they eat as well as the amount of calories they are in taking. They become obsessed with weight loss and the way that they look often having to continually weigh themselves.

2. Binging/ Purging subtype is characterized by those individuals that binge and then feel the need to get rid of  nonpurging type.
those calories my methods such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxatives, etc.

Bulimia: This disorder usually precedes Anorexia Nervosa and is very similar in fact. It is described as eating large quantities of food, also
known as binging, during a short amount of time. During this time they usually like to eat the food in private and eat junk food until they can’t anymore. They are overcome with a feeling of hunger that is uncontrollable in their eyes. This period is followed by a feeling of regret and feeling fat so they purge in an effort to reverse their actions. The episodes of binging/purging must be recurrent and maintained over a period of a couple of months to be considered Bulimia. Like Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia has two subtypes: purging type, and
Cause:
There are many factors that can cause both anorexia and bulimia. One of the main factors has reportedly been identified as the increased media influence that makes
girls/boys think that to be beautiful and successful you must look a certain way. Many girls/boys look at these actors/actresses, models, singers, and think they have to look that way because that’s what is acceptable for society. They become obsessed with the thought of perfection and think that being skinny will get them one step closer to achieving that ideal image. Body dismorphia is often common in some individuals, which is when they perceive themselves as being fat when in reality they are not. They look at themselves in the mirror and the image that they see is not what another person would see. They are in fear of becoming fat and will go to extremes in order to prevent it. The means by which they attain their desired weight or continue their weight loss include: excessive exercise, vomiting after meals, abusing laxatives, diuretics, and diet pills.
In some cases the disorder is a result of a traumatic event or family issues (i.e. Sexual abuse, physical abuse, drug abuse, bullying) that make the individual depressed or may cause anxiety or distress. The individual has problems coping with the issue and in turn becomes obsessed with food. Some people feel that they have no control over their own lives so they feel some sense of control by controlling what they can eat.
Potential Risk factors
It is very important if you feel that you or someone else you know may have this disorder that you seek psychological treatment. These disorders are chronic and become increasingly worse as time passes and your obsession with food and losing weight becomes worse. Having this disorder may make you a victim both physically and psychologically. Medical consequences of this disease include: developing other co morbid diseases, bone deterioration, muscle loss, teeth enamel erosion, irritation and tears in lining of the throat, esophagus, and stomach, irregular bowl movements, permanent feeling of cold in your extremities, dry skin, hair loss, dehydration, cardiac problems, and liver damage. Some psychological consequences include: low-self esteem/self-worth, problems with expressing ones emotions, depression, etc. This disorder
makes the individual a prisoner of their own body. They become so encompassed by their weight and what they eat that they are unable to live a happy and fruitful life. In some cases a person can become so unhappy that they choose to inflict pain on themselves and sometimes even resort to suicide as their way out.
Treatment
It is very important to get treatment for these disorders as soon as possible. The longer you wait the more difficult it will be to reverse the damage it has caused both physically and mentally. Depending on the individual’s situation and needs, the psychiatrist will devise a plan suitable for the individual. One of the most effective treatments is cognitive behavior therapy. It is also very important for the parents of the individuals suffering from the disorder to be understanding and not cause more distress by arguments at home with family members. Be supportive and make your child feel comfortable and that you are there to love them and not judge them

Topic: Substance Use Disorders
Description: Alcohol and drug use is one of the most dangerous and life threatening activities to take part in. Many people start to experiment with drugs and alcohol early on during their adolescence as a recreational activity they do withfriends; however, this can become habit and lead to potential misuse and abuse of the drug. Being under the influence at any age can cause the individual to be out of control and constant use can make the person build a tolerance and future dependence on the specific drug or alcoholic beverage. Substance use disorders are divided into two main groups. These two groups include substance abuse and substance dependence.

*According to the DSM-IV-TR there is a specific criterion for each of these types of substance use disorders. (Dulcan, p.796)

Diagnostic criteria for substance abuse
1. An unhealthy pattern of substance use that leads to major problems both physically and mentally, as displayed by one or more of the following during a period of a year.
• Repeated substance use that results in the individual’s inability to perform adequately at work, home, or school setting.
• Repeated substance abuse in situations in which it is dangerous and cause the individual physical harm
• Repeated substance abuse that leads to problems with the law
• Chronic substance use regardless of having recurrent social problems as a result of the effects of the substance.
Diagnostic criteria for substance dependence
2. An unhealthy pattern of substance use that leads to major problems both physically and mentally, as displayed by three or more of the following during a period of a year.
• Tolerance build up shown by either a need
for more consumption of the substance to attain a desired state or less effect of the substance after recurrent use of the substance
• Withdrawal
• substance is taken in larger doses and throughout a longer period of time than planned
• the person is constantly attempting to cut down on the substance use but is unsuccessful
• a considerable amount of time is dedicated to activities that involve the substance
• the person either spends less time or completely stops doing things that were a part of his/her everyday life before the start of the substance use.
• Recurrent substance use even though attention has been brought up to them that their substance use has affected them negatively either psychologically or physically.

Cause
There is not one single cause of developing substance use disorders. There are many factors that play a role acquiring this disorder and the more factors you are exposed to, the more chances you have of developing it. One of the main risk factors, especially in adolescents, is peer influence. As mentioned before, a majority of the people who first start experimenting with drugs/alcohol start during their teenage years as a result of peer influence. Some people start using drugs/alcohol because they want to feel accepted in a particular group. Others do it as a recreational activity with some friends. Whatever the reason may be peer pressure and influence plays a decisive role in how an individual acts during that period of development. Another major factor is
having parents and/or family members that suffer from the disorder. Some individuals also take up using drugs/alcohol because of stressful events that have occurred or are recurrent in the individual’s life. Drugs/alcohol allow them a temporary escape from their problems. Although it is only a temporary solution, they feel that it is in the only way they can deal with their problems and therefore the substance use because more and more frequent adding to the potential physical and psychological problems that manifest from the substance use.

Prevention
Prevention of this disorder is quite difficult however some strategies have proven to have a significant affect. One of the main things that can contribute to the onset of substance use is peer influence; therefore, surrounding yourself with good company and people who do not use drugs/alcohol is always important. Remember that if the temptation is not there it will be that much easier to stay away from potentially becoming a victim of this deteriorating disorder. Many programs have also been established that aim specifically at pre-teen and teen groups and provide them with awareness
of different drugs/alcohol and their effects.

Treatment
It is very important that if you feel you meet the diagnostic criteria for any of the two types of substance use disorders that you seek immediate psychiatric help. Dependence and abuse of any substance can be very difficult to overcome and the faster you decide to get treatment the easier the process will be to get better and get your life back in order. Substance use has
four stages in which an individual dealing with substance use can fall into. These include: experimental use, regular use, pre-occupation with use, and chemical dependence. When evaluated by a psychiatrist he will see which stage of use you fall into and what the best plan of recovery is for your specific needs.

Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Description:
1). Separation Anxiety Disorder- Also known as SAD is distinguished from GAD by extreme anxiety due to being apart from a parent or someone who they are closely attached to. Often they are also overcome by fear and worry that the person they are attached to and or themselves will be hurt by a catastrophic event such as death, kidnapping, etc. This worry becomes excessive due to the fact that they feel they will be torn apart from their person of attachment.
• Many children exhibit a form of separation anxiety during their first two years of life. After the age of 2 years, most children’s symptoms of separation anxiety decrease. This is typical of a young child; however, if symptoms persist and cause distress to the individual then an evaluation should be administered. This disorder may cause individuals to avoid situations where they will be separated from their parents/ attachment figures or come up with excuses why they can’t for instance go to school. Some children may even complain that they aren’t feeling well (headache, stomach ache, etc.) because of their anxiousness of being apart from their attachment figures.
• According to DSM-IV-TR the criteria for exhibiting SAD are if the child exhibits three of the following eight symptoms for at least a period of a month. ( Dulcan, pg. 558)
 Excessive worry when forced to leave home pr attachment figure
 Excessive worry that attachment figure or themselves will be harmed
 Excessive worry that an unseemly event will occur that will result in the separation from an attachment figure
 Recurrent refusal to go to school because of fear of being apart from attachment figure or of leaving home
 Excessive worry and anxiety of being home alone without attachment figure
 Excessive worry of going to bed alone or sleeping away from home
 Recurrent nightmares that illustrate events where the individual is separated from the person of attachment
 Recurrent complaints of sickness or pain when having to be separated from an attachment figure

2).Generalized Anxiety Disorder- GAD is found in individuals who express extreme worry and anxiety of not just one specific thing but multiple facets of life. They find it very difficult to control their anxiety because of constant worriment and therefore exhibit various symptoms that potentially can cause
problems in imperative areas of development.
• Like SAD, some anxiety and worry is normal, however, once it starts to have a deleterious effect on the individual and starts to affect them in any mental/social/physical way, then attention should be paid.
• According to DSM- IV-TR the criteria for exhibiting GAD are if the individual exhibits three of the following six (one of the following six if child) symptoms for the majority of a period of six months. (Dulcan, pg. 559)
 Impatient/agitated
 Low energy, easily tired
 Trouble focusing
 Muscle tension
 Difficulty staying or falling asleep

Cause:
The cause of these Anxiety Disorders can be a result of multiple factors including: genetics, child’s temperament, form of parenting, negative life experience or event. More than likely, if a parent of an individual suffers from anxiety, there is a greater chance that the individual will develop the disorder. Parenting styles can also have an effect. Research suggests that parents who are more strict and controlling of their children as well as those who are negative had higher frequencies of children that suffered from anxiety disorders. Negative life experiences such as death of a close family member or directly or indirectly experiencing physical or emotional abuse.

Treatment:
It is very important if you meet the diagnostic criteria and if you feel that your excessive anxiety causes you any type of impairment in your health or daily activities that you seek professional help. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to reverse the effects of the disorder and the more time it will take. Immediately get evaluated by a psychiatrist to see if you are suffering from the disorder and take the first steps to recovery. You will be given a plan for
recover base on specific individual needs and goals. Most often, Cognitive Behavior Therapy will be used in conjunction with medication prescribed by the psychiatrist if needed.

Bullying: Threat to Our Youth!
Bullying has increasingly become a common practice among our youth for the past couple of decades. It is a horrible practice that has spread like a disease throughout the entire world. Recently, many reports have been made of the dangers that can come about by bullying and the harm that it can cause the individual not only immediately but also later on in life. Many people see bullying as just teasing and that it is a normal part of adolescent behavior. But this is a common misconception that many people believe perhaps because of the lack of awareness.

Bullying, is described as a particular type of aggression in which the individual performing the behavior has the intention of causing harm, the behavior is repeated over time, and the bully/bullied display an imbalance of dominance ( bully is more powerful whereas the person being bullied shows less power). This bullying behavior can also take many forms and can affect all sexes, races, religions. It can either manifest verbally, physically or psychologically. Verbal bullying can be displayed by name calling and threats made either directly or indirectly such as a text message, phone call, or through computer network such as facebook, myspace, and twitter. Both ways are equally harmful in magnitude and no person should feel that because they didn’t say it directly to the person’s face that it should not be considered bullying. Physical bullying can be shown for example by hitting, pushing, sexual harassment, etc. And lastly, psychological bullying demonstrated by rumors, and social rejection.

In girls, the common form of bullying that is visible is verbal and psychological. Name-calling, verbal threats, spreading of rumors, and deliberate social rejection are the most popular ways that girls get bullied; boys, however, usually fall victim to physical tactics of bullying as well as threats, name-calling, and rejection. The majority of research has shown that individuals who are bullied and those that do the bullying both show lower psychosocial functioning. Those who bully usually have problems with conduct and academic achievement. They also tend to involve themselves in potentially destructive behaviors such as smoking and consuming alcohol. On the other hand, those that are bullied usually show social and emotional problems. Young individuals that are bullied usually have difficulty interacting with kids their age and making friends. They were found to have a lower level of independence due to more parental involvement as well as a tendency of feeling alone and isolated.

Most bullying usually starts at around middle school and in some cases it may persist throughout your adult years. However, just because an individual was only bullied in their adolescent and preadolescent years, doesn’t mean that they won’t be affected by the experience in later years. Bullying can be very traumatic for many individuals and the harmful effects, both emotional and physical,
can be chronic. It is very important that parents as well as teachers take preventative measures and educated their students and kids on the dangers and potential effects of this behavior so that we may help stop this act.
Bullying: amenaza a nuestra juventud!

.The Key to Your Child’s Success in School!
Extensive research has been made on the factors that influence a child’s performance in the classroom and it has been widely reported that the most significant factor is the parent’s involvement in all aspects of their child’s life, including: home, school, activities etc. How long the parent went to school or how well they did as well as what economic background they came from are not as important factors as the parent’s involvement. It is very important for parents to express to their children how vital school work and academics are to attain a good job. It is the key ingredient to a successful future for their child.
It is the parent’s responsibility to be pro-active and be hands on in their child’s life. Their success in school is dependent on the parent’s interest and involvement with teachers, homework, school activities, outside activities, decision making, etc. “How can I get involved,” parents may ask. First of all, try to get involved in your own home. Make sure you set a comfortable noise free environment where your child can do their homework. There should be no distractions such as TV, radio, or computer on at time as it will delay the amount of time it takes to complete an assignment. A tip for when your child is doing their homework, is to occasionally bring them a healthy snack that can provide them energy. If you want to be really hands on, it can be very helpful for your child if you physically help them. Sit down for one to two hours every day to help them do their homework. The value of importance you place on schoolwork will set an example for them. Encouragement is also a very important factor. Be a support system for them and encourage them to always do their best, never put them down as this will discourage them from doing schoolwork. Setting goals and a reward system may also be beneficial and provide an incentive for them to do well in school by showing them that although it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to do well; it is worth it in the end.
Besides getting involved in homework, research has shown that following a daily routine and being aware/ controlling your child’s afterschool activities are very effective tools in improving school performance. A daily routine of when your child gets home from school will help them with following rules and developing time management skills. It is also important to know where and with whom your child goes out with during their free time. Give them the opportunity to show that they can be trusted but at the same time do not allow your-self to be taken advantage of, remember as the parents you have the last say.
Many parents may ask, “But why is it so important.” Parental involvement allows the parent to be aware of their child both at home and at school and see what their child’s strengths and weaknesses are. That way they can focus more on the child’s difficulties. Communication is crucial. Parent-child as well as parent-teacher communication is necessary to improve your child’s educational outcome. Parents!, don’t be afraid to contact and speak with your son/daughter’s teacher. It is better to be aware of any difficulty or problem your child might have early on in order to help them throughout the process. Even if you feel uncomfortable because you think your English isn’t good enough; put those issues aside. Your child depends on you and your communication with the teacher regarding behavior in school, homework, and class work in order to reach their highest level of achievement.

Topic: Autistic Disorder
Autism is a developmental disorder that has an early onset and can be recognized in children in their first 30 months of life. This disorder has a high incidence of mental retardation and is characterized by symptoms that affect their ability to be social and form relationships. Every child with autism can have a different experience and may show different levels of severity. It is because of this inconsistency that it is important that each individual be properly tested and given a specific plan targeted to their specific needs and goals.
Young children that have autism have problems keeping eye contact and tend to not be interested in the human voice, as a result many parents mistaken autism in their children for deafness. Many children also are unresponsive to affection by parents which makes it difficult to form a bonding relationship. Unlike most babies they do not follow their parents around the house when they leave their sight and in the presence of an unfamiliar individual they are not started and cling to parent. As they grow older and become adolescents they may show more attachment towards their family however they continue to isolate themselves from kids their age and have no interested in playing games with others or forming peer relationships. Those individuals that may want to have friends, however, usually have difficulty making friends because of the symptoms of autism which cause them to be unresponsive to other’s interests and difficulty of understanding humor.
Another diagnostic criterion for individuals with Autism is impairment in communication either by impairment in nonverbal or verbal communication. They tend to lack facial expressions and rarely use gestures as a form of communicating with others. It is not unusual for individuals with Autism to be mute for a majority of their childhood and may even never develop the ability to speak or understand speech.
Most individuals with this disorder are very resistant to change and if any part of their daily routine may be subject to change, they can become extremely irritable and distressed. Their need for sameness and routine sometimes leads individuals to perform ritualistic or compulsive behaviors. A heightened or lowered threshold for pain and touch may be seen. Their senses are heightened and for this reason they may develop a fascination for lights, patterns, sounds, and characteristics of certain objects. (Wiener&Dulcan, 2004)
Because we don’t know what causes Autism specifically, a cure has not yet been found. However, with specific structured treatment and a good support system it has been found that many symptoms that are common for Autism can be lowered and allow those individuals to prosper and become a valuable member of society.
